Wedmore men pulled off a great win in the 2nd round of the County knock-out competition by beating Victoria of Weston-super-Mare two rinks to nil in a 1+1 rink home and away fixture. At home Dave Nicholls and crew put on a sterling performance, much helped by scores of 4,5,5 and 6 dotted across the ends to win by 28 shots to 13. On the away rink the lead chopped and changed but Eddie Payne led his men forward from end 13 by taking the lead and winning the next five ends leading to a fine victory of 24 shots to 12.
Rink Scores: D Collins, A Birch, S Heeley, D Nicholls 28 shots to 13.
R Newell, K Pettit, C Moss, E Payne 24 shots to 12; overall score 52 shots to 13.
Wedmore now look forward to the third round when they will meet Donyatt or Clevedon.
In a Mixed Friendly at home to Winscombe, Wedmore won one rink and drew the other with an overall score of 39 shots to 23. Beryl Carson’s team took the lead early on and never looked back, winning two thirds of the ends including a six and won emphatically by 24 shots to 8. Brian Aston’s side led most of the way but a score of five by Winscombe in the penultimate end left them only one shot behind. They duly scored one shot in that final end to finish with a tie.
The Ladies played a home Friendly against Victoria and won on both rinks. The outcome was never in doubt for Julie Masters’ team who, aided by two sixes, had a good score of 24 shots to 15. Maureen Hordle’s bunch had to fight harder for their win, losing the lead on end three and not reclaiming it until end 11. From there they pushed on to win two thirds of the ends, scoring 18 shots to 13 to give an overall match score of 42-28.
